Our search for well-being is a universal and deeply ingrained pursuit, often experienced as seeking contentment, happiness, and freedom. Conventionally, this search is driven by our descriptive frameworks, leading us to believe that well-being resides in particular experiences, circumstances, and states that we label as positive or desirable. We strive to maximise these “good” experiences and minimise those we deem negative or undesirable, such as sadness, fear, or discomfort.
However, this ordinary approach to well-being, while natural, is ultimately unreliable and doomed to fail in providing lasting peace. The fundamental reason for this is the transient nature of all phenomena: experiences are impermanent. This constant flux means that anything we try to grasp or hold onto for well-being will inevitably disappear, leading to a recurring sense of lack, incompleteness, and suffering. This perpetual cycle of seeking and losing creates a sense of unease and dissatisfaction.
The Unconditioned Source of Wellbeing
A radically different perspective, one that we explore in our non-dual therapy course, is that the most profound sense of well-being, freedom, and fulfilment is not conditioned by anything whatsoever. This unconditioned well-being is always present and never absent, regardless of how experience is described or what particular forms it takes. True well-being is a natural byproduct of recognising our non-dual true nature.
According to the message of non-duality, the fundamental reality that we are exists without our having to do anything to make it appear. It encompasses everything that appears, including all experiences, thoughts, feelings, sensations, and circumstances, regardless of their conventional labels. It is intrinsically full, complete, and whole, with nothing missing. When directly investigated, experience, which is nothing but the expression of reality, proves to be beyond words, concepts, and definitions. It has no findable edges or boundaries.
How to Access the True Source of Wellbeing
As we explore in our non-dual therapy course, accessing this profound well-being involves a shift in our way of perceiving and relating to experience, moving from a descriptive, conceptual understanding to a direct, experiential one.
Our common habit is to focus on the content and labels of experience, such as “this is happiness” or “that is fear”. Language and conceptualisation tend to divide the world up into distinct parts and create hierarchies (e.g., this is better than that). The alternative is to shift attention to the sheer presence, existence, or “beingness” of the moment, regardless of its description. For example, instead of labelling an experience as “anxiety,” we can feel “what is this?” in its raw, energetic quality, which transcends the conceptual label. This direct, experiential inquiry reveals that what we think we know about experience is often an oversimplified conceptual version of its infinite, rich, and indefinable nature.
A key insight is discovering what is common to all experiences. This commonality is the total presence or beingness of everything. Every experience, whether joyful or painful, shares the quality of simply being. This understanding highlights that reality is a singular, undivided whole. Conflict and disharmony are merely ways this one reality can appear. There is no disharmony between phenomena when viewed from this broader perspective because there are no separate “things” crashing into each other; there is just This. Human suffering stems from imagining that what we want is in some other moment or from believing in the reality of conceptual lack. The liberating realisation is that bondage doesn’t actually exist as a definable thing; it is merely a description, and by entering into it experientially, its boundless, indefinable nature is revealed as freedom itself.
We shift from striving to achieve to simply noticing what is already the case. Resting in the current perception is key, as this perception is completely awake and perfect right now, regardless of its descriptive content. There’s no need to try to control experience or try to get somewhere else.
Implications of this Recognition
Discovering the unconditioned nature of well-being shifts our experience of life. This understanding provides true healing for struggles, giving us access to greater contentment. It allows one to find ease in unease and by recognising the intrinsic equanimity and boundless nature of life within even the most difficult states.
By seeing that every experience is an expression of the one, indivisible reality, there is a deep sense of natural acceptance and safety. Nothing can truly harm the wholeness of existence because there is nothing outside of it. We are it.
By shifting attention from the fleeting descriptions of experience to its undeniable presence and indefinable quality, we can discover the boundless peace, freedom, and completeness that is always and already here, regardless of life’s constantly changing forms.
