According to the message of non-duality, suffering arises from the mistaken identity with a conceptual sense of self. The cause of suffering is not in external conditions, psychological wounds, or circumstances. It lies in ignorance — not knowing one’s true nature.
The False Sense of “I”
Most people live with a deeply ingrained belief that they are a separate, individual self — a “me” located somewhere inside the body or mind. This sense of being a limited person is taken for granted. But as the message of non-duality points out, this “me” is not found in direct experience; it is constructed in thought.
This conceptual self — the imagined individual — is inherently lacking. Why? Because it is not real. It is an overlay of identity added on top of the simple, open presence that you already are. And once this sense of separation is believed, it gives rise to a host of psychological suffering: fear, desire, doubt, anxiety, the search for peace, the need for control.
So long as this false identity is in place, suffering continues. Trying to fix suffering from within the framework of the false self is like rearranging furniture in a burning house — it misses the root issue.
The Light of Clear Seeing
The end of suffering, then, is not about changing experience. It’s not about perfecting the body, the mind, or the world. It is about seeing through the false sense of being a separate self — to clearly recognize your real nature.
Non-dual teachings emphasise that this real nature is present awareness itself. It is not something to be gained. It is what you already are — the simple, clear knowing that is here right now. Not a state, not a feeling, not a thought, but the aware presence in which all experiences appear.
As you look and see that what you are is not a limited self but open awareness, the whole edifice of suffering begins to collapse. There is no suffering in awareness itself. Suffering only arises when there is identification with the imagined separate “me.”
How This Seeing Happens
This clear seeing is a simple, radical shift in perspective — seeing what is already true, right now.
Non-duality teachers often point out that this isn’t about “becoming” awareness, but recognizing that you have never been anything else. The direct pointer is: check whether the “me” you believe yourself to be can actually be found. When this is looked into carefully, it is discovered that the “me” is a mental image, a story — not an actual entity.
Once the illusion of the separate self is exposed, what remains is your natural being: the peaceful, spacious, knowing presence that has always been here. This seeing, when clear, leaves nothing more to seek and no one left to suffer.
The Natural State
In the absence of the false self, there is no resistance to life. Experience flows freely, without a center trying to control or judge. This is what some non-duality teachers such as Nisargadatta Maharaj refer to as the “natural state” — life lived from the standpoint of being, not becoming.
Importantly, this isn’t a special or altered state. It’s what has been present all along, overlooked due to the belief in separation. The recognition of this natural state marks the end of suffering — not because life becomes perfect, but because the root misidentification is undone.
Conclusion: The End Is Now
The end of suffering is not a future event. It is a present discovery. It happens the moment the false sense of self is seen through, and one stands knowingly as the presence that has always been here. There is no technique, no journey, no attainment needed.
The root cause of all psychological suffering is the belief in a individual self. The only solution is to discern clearly that this identity is a conceptual illusion and to realise your true nature as presence, awareness or consciousness. When this is recognised, the seeking ceases, and suffering ends in the light of what is true.
So the cause of the end of suffering is not an act, not a doing, but a seeing — a seeing through the false and a standing in what is true.
And this is available now, always. You are already the peace you seek.
